Healthy Minds Project Assistants

Lisa Hsiehhealthyminds@students.ubc.ca  Hi there! My name is Lisa, and I’m about to start my 3rd year of Commerce. This year has been an exciting year, as I was involved with Marine Drive Residence Association as Marketing Representative, and the Student Leadership Conference as an Active Promotions Leader. In fact, I’m back on the SLC Planning Committee again as a Corporate Relations Coordinator. My undergraduate experience so far most definitely wouldn’t have been the same, had it not been for these various involvement opportunities. I’m excited to be able to work in the CSI again, as no experience is ever the same in there! Without a doubt, I’m also thrilled to be a project assistant for the Healthy Minds program, and to develop new initiatives for the program this summer. When I’m not actively promoting healthy minds at UBC, you’ll be able to find me outside soaking up some Vancouver sun!

Chapman Learning Commons Student Assistants

Nick Thortonclc.assistants@ubc.ca My name is Nick Thornton, I’m a 4th year Arts student majoring in History. My work with the Chapman Learning Commons began when I started at UBC and I am proud of all the great work we’ve done to help improve academic student success. I have a passion for learning and education which has allowed me to participate as the ESL Program Coordinator at International House, as an Access and Diversity Tutor and launch my own website to “demystify the arts and humanities,” unboringlearning.com. I love seeing technology used for social good and have had the pleasure of working with the English Undergraduate journal: The Garden Statuary, the Learning Commons and the Library to see through projects that help connect students to great resources.
Nick Harvey-Cheethamclc.assistants@ubc.ca I am about to graduate from the Faculty of Arts as a newly-minted Bachelor of Anthropology. As a Chapman Learning Commons Assistant, it is my job to help improve student learning. My interests lie at the intersection of technolgy, education, design and society and I’m excited to match these interests with the fantastic resouces available at the Chapman Learning Commons. During my time at UBC, I’ve been lucky to do everything from going on exchange to Denmark, to be president of the UBCimprov Club, to writing for the UBC FYI Newsletter, to excavating a Roman fort in Jordan, to working as an Assistant with UBC Peer Programs and at the Centre for Student Invovlement. I hope to bring a strong student-focused voice to my work this summer and I am excited to be part of such a great team.
Gillian Corboclc.assistants@ubc.ca Hey! My name is Gillian Corbo and I am heading into my 4th year of Kinesiology. I’ve always had a passion for improving learning, and this year I was lucky enough to present a time management workshop at both the CLASS and SLC conferences. Since UBC has provided me so many opportunities, some of the things I’ve been able to do here include: being a Peer Mentor to first year students, volunteering with stroke survivors at the Spinal Cord Research Lab, analyze movement patterns of varsity athletes, and volunteer as an Assistant Director for UBC Rec. When I’m not in classes, I love traveling, playing soccer, snowboarding, and I’m secretly a fierce cook on the side. I am looking forward to applying my past experience to the Learning Commons website this summer, and if you’re ever around the CSI, stop in for a chat!

Whitney Hussainimagine4@exchange.ubc.ca Hey UBC!! My name is Whitney, and I’m a 4th year student majoring in Dietetics. I have volunteered and worked with Orientations for the past few years as a Welcome Leader and Assistant Coordinator for GALA, a Squad Manager for Imagine and was the Orientation and Transition Coordinator the past academic year. The impact IMAGINE had during my first year at UBC was immense, and am thrilled to work with the future Orientations leaders to leave the same experiences and memories for incoming first year/transfer/international students! Outside of Orientations, I am also the President of the Land and Food Systems Undergraduate Society, and love being involved with leadership based initiatives both on and off campus. During my downtime, I’m a food lover, spending my time exploring Vancouver for new eateries, and baking my time away. WOOT ORIENTATIONS!

As an OTC for Summer 2012, I look forward to working with the O-Team and other students leaders towards Imagine 2012! When I’m not in class or at the CSI, I enjoy watching sports and am looking forward to Euro 2012!
Kelsey Lentersimagine2@exchange.ubc.ca Hi, my name is Kelsey and I’m a recent UBC graduate. I completed my degree in Sociology and Human Geography, and while I loved all aspects of my academic education, much of what I learned throughout my degree happened outside of the classroom. I became involved with RezLife in my second year as a Residence Advisor and most recently as a Residence Coordinator. In between, I completed 3 work terms with Arts Co-op. Being involved in these capacities was truly what made my undergraduate experience so wonderful. I am excited to round off my time at UBC working on the O-Team in the CSI, planning Imagine Day. I look forward to working with such an amazing group of student leaders this summer. In my free time, I’ll be cooking and baking up a storm, crafting, reading and spending time with friends. Come on in to the CSI to say hi!

 Student Development Assistant, Science

Brendan Clydesdassist@science.ubc.ca My name is Brendan Clyde and I am a fourth year Psychology student here at UBC. I am presently on my final Arts Coop term working as the Student Development Assistant for the Faculty of Science. I had such a blast working as the SD assistant for Arts that I thought I’d do it all over again for Science. I absolutely love working with all the lovely people here at UBC and am looking forward to another crazy Imagine day!

Terry Project Student Assistants

Gordon Katicgordon.katic@ubc.ca I am a fifth year student of philosophy and political science. Since arriving at UBC, I’ve maintained an active and critical voice on the biggest and most important issues to students; from tuition, to academics, governance, to political activism and free speech. Among other things, I’ve been weekly columnist for The Ubyssey and editor-in-chief of the UBC Journal of International Affairs. This year, my focus will be primarily on issues of international politics. I’ll be working with the UBC Terry Project to promote dialogue around issues of global import, like climate change, food insecurity, and social inequity.
Rachel Gutmanrachel.gutman@ubc.ca Hola todos! My name is Rachel, I’m a 4th year Global Resource Systems student in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and have recently returned from a semester in Central Mexico. Academically, my interests primarily lie in environmental economics, though I secretly wish I was a farmer. Outside of class I am  involved with local non-profits, particularly the Ancient Forest Alliance that works to protect BC’s remaining Old Growth Forests. More recently I’ve begun working in environmental education, mentoring high school garden clubs in Vancouver.  I’m thrilled to be working with the Terry project this summer as I wholeheartedly believe that the world’s most pressing subjects need to be analyzed under an interdisciplinary lens. Outside work and school, I enjoy being outdoors and skiing recklessly fast in knee-deep powder.
Sam Fennsam.fenn@ubc.ca Hello, my name is Sam and I am a first year masters student, a Teaching Assistant and a researcher here at UBC. I also produce and co-host a radio program called the Terry Project Podcast on CITR 101.9FM. As a UBC Mix assistant I am going to be facilitating interdisciplinary connections at UBC, particularly at the undergraduate level. If you have an idea for interdisciplinary work that you would like to do, or if you have a question or query about the Podcast, please send me an email or come visit me at the Centre for Student Involvement.

Geoff Listergeoff@geofflister.com  My name is Geoff Lister and I am a third year Commerce student specializing in marketing. I hail from The Ubyssey, having just spent two years as the Art Director for the campus publication. The video editor decided that I wasn’t working hard enough between my design and photography at the paper and suckered me into shooting and producing videos a few too many times and I fell in love. Despite my undying affection for the arts, various affairs with sailing, soccer and traveling steal precious moments away from my camera. This summer the camera has prevailed over my other diversions. I look forward to bringing an authentic and unique perspective to the student communications portfolio.
